Starving fugitives 'sold as sex slaves'
to Chinese men

Thousands of North Korean fugitives
living and hiding in China are forced to become slave
labourers or prostitutes, or are sold and resold to
Chinese men as "sex toys", campaigners said
yesterday.
There are between 10,000 and 300,000
Korean refugees hiding in China and monitors for Human
Rights Watch (HRW) found those they spoke to were resigned
to a sub-human existence in China. Many fear they will
be captured and sent home to serve a life sentence in
one of North Korea's notorious prison camps, where inmates
are reportedly experimented on with chemicals, starved
or shot.
Yu Sang Jun, a North Korean farmer,
and his South Korean rescuer, Chun Ki Won, were in London
yesterday to urge the international community to condemn
China for failing to recognise thousands of North Koreans
as refugees.
Mr Yu's wife and his four-year-old
son starved to death in the North Korean famine of the
late 1990s, when they were reduced to eating grass and
tree bark.
In 1998, he and his seven-year-old
son, Chul Min, joined hundreds of thousands of refugees
risking death to flee to China. Beijing treats them
as "economic migrants" and deports them to
North Korea, where they face execution for fleeing -
a crime tantamount to treason.
While working in near-slave conditions
in a cement factory, Mr Yu was found by Mr Chun, a South
Korean missionary who has rescued more than 150 North
Korean refugees in China. Mr Yu fled with 10 others
to Mongolia but Chul Min, then aged 10, lost his guide
and died in the desert.
In December last year, Mr Chun was
arrested in China while attempting to transport 12 North
Koreans, including a pregnant woman, across the Mongolian
border. He served seven months in a Chinese jail.
Mike Jendrzejczyk, of HRW, said: "North
Korea bears the main responsibility for this exodus
of refugees, who are fleeing hunger and human rights
abuses. But the Chinese government has important responsibilities
too; forcibly returning asylum-seekers is a blatant
violation of international law."
The group is also calling on China
to stop the arrest and intimidation of missionaries
and aid workers. Mr Chun, who is visiting Britain with
an evangelical humanitarian group, Christian Solidarity
Worldwide, said: "Yu is free now, but he has lost
everything."

성 노리개로 한족에게 팔려나간다.

어제 캠페인을 벌이는 분들께서 중국 내에 숨어 살고 있는
수 천명의 탈북자 인구의 대다수가 한족에게 노예나 창녀,
또 "성 노리개"로 팔려 나가고 있다고 증언하였다.
Human Rights Watch (HRW)의 통계에 따르면, 중국 내에
숨어 살고 있는 탈북자 들의 수는 10,000명에서 300,000명사이라고
밝혀졌다. 그들은 모두가 하나 같이 북한으로 송환될 경우
평생을 북한의 수용소에서 지내다 굶어 죽거나 사형, 또는
약물 실험을 통해 죽을 현실에 두려워 한다고 했다.
북한에서 농부였던 유 상준씨와, 그를 구해준 남한인 천
기원씨는 어제 런던에서 수 천명의 탈북자들의 사태를 파악하지
않으려 하는 중국의 태도를 국제 사회는 책망해야 한다고
재촉했다.
유씨의 부인과 4살 먹은 아들은 1990년 후반에 시작된 식량
부족으로 인해 들판의 풀과 나무 껍질을 먹고 살던 때에
굶어 죽었다.
1998년에 그와 그의 7살 짜리 아들은 수 천만리의 길을
헤매고 죽을 고비를 넘으며 중국으로 망명하였다. 하지만
베이징에 도착한 그들을 "경제적 이주민"으로
판단하여 그들은 북한으로 송환되었다.
유씨가 시멘트 공장에서 노예처럼 일하는 것을 목격한 천
기원씨(중국에서 150명 이상의 북한난민들의 구출 작업을
하던 한국 선교사)는 유씨와 그의 아들을 포함한 10명의
탈북자들을 몽골 루트를 통해 구출 작업 중에 그의 아들은
길을 잃어 사막에서 죽었다.
작년 12월에 천 기원씨는 12명의 탈북자들(그 중에는 새
생명을 임신한 산모 포함) 데리고 불법으로 국경을 넘었다는
사실로 처참한 중국 옥살이를 7개월 동안 하였다.
Human Rights Watch의 Mike Jendrzejczyk는 이렇게 말했다
: "배고픔과 인권탄압에 견디지 못해 탈북 하는 이들의
현상을 북한이 대대적으로 책임 져야 하지만, 국제법을
어기며 탈북자들을 북한으로 송환하는 중국 정부에게도
큰 책임이 있다."
또한 이들은 중국정부가 선교사들에게 탄압하고 체포하는
행위를 중단하라고 말하였다.
Christian Solidarity Worldwide와 런던에 함께 참석한
천 기원씨는 "지금의 유상준씨는 이제 자유롭지만,
그는 그의 전부를 잃었다"라고 말했다. |
